Welcome, Patients & Families

This site helps you find clinical trials for vascular conditions across the NHS. Everything here is written in plain English so you can make informed decisions about your care.

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial is a carefully planned research study that tests new treatments, procedures, or ways of managing a health condition. Every trial is reviewed by an independent ethics committee to make sure it is safe and fair. Taking part is always voluntary — you can leave at any time without affecting your normal care.

In vascular surgery, trials might compare a new surgical technique with the current standard, test a new medication to prevent blood clots, or study better ways to monitor your recovery.

Why take part?

  • You may get access to new treatments before they are widely available
  • You help doctors learn what works best so future patients benefit too
  • You receive extra monitoring and care from the research team
  • All costs related to the trial are covered — you won’t be out of pocket

Is it safe?

Your safety is the top priority. Before any trial can start, it must be approved by the Health Research Authority (HRA) and an independent Research Ethics Committee. Trained doctors and nurses monitor every participant throughout the study.

You will always receive a clear information sheet explaining what the trial involves, any possible risks, and what happens if you change your mind. You are never pressured to take part, and saying no will not affect the care you receive from your NHS team.
