EVAAR-UK trial passes 100-participant milestone across 15 NHS sites

The EVAAR-UK trial has reached an important milestone, with more than 100 patients now randomised across its 15 participating NHS sites. The study, sponsored by the University of Leeds, is comparing endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) with conventional open surgical repair in patients with infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms who are considered fit for both procedures.

Chief investigators say recruitment has been strongest at the larger tertiary vascular centres, with several district general hospitals also contributing steadily since the trial opened. "Reaching 100 participants is a real testament to the hard work of research nurses and vascular teams up and down the country," said one of the trial leads. "It puts us firmly on course to answer a question that matters enormously for NHS patients and for how we plan aneurysm services."

The trial will follow participants for long-term outcomes including survival, re-intervention rates and quality of life. Sites still wishing to take part are encouraged to contact the coordinating centre. Patients interested in the study should speak to their vascular surgeon or GP, who can advise on local eligibility.
