The Role of the Research Nurse in Vascular Surgery Trials

Behind every successful vascular surgery trial is a team of research nurses who keep the study running day to day. Their role is often misunderstood and undervalued, yet trials simply cannot be delivered without them.

What does a vascular research nurse do? The scope is far broader than many clinicians realise. Research nurses are responsible for: screening and identifying eligible patients; approaching patients and supporting the consent process; randomisation and treatment allocation; collecting baseline and follow-up data; coordinating study visits and investigations; managing serious adverse event reporting; liaising with sponsors and monitors; maintaining the investigator site file; and supporting patients throughout their participation in the trial.

In many centres, the research nurse is the single point of continuity for trial patients. Surgeons rotate, registrars move on, but the research nurse remains. They build relationships with patients that improve retention and data quality.

How can clinicians work better with research nurses?

1. Include them in clinical discussions early. If you think a patient might be eligible for a trial, mention it to the research nurse before the consultation, not after the patient has left.

2. Respect their expertise in protocol compliance. Research nurses understand the protocol in detail and can prevent deviations that might compromise data.

3. Support protected research time. Research nurses who are constantly pulled back to clinical duties cannot deliver trials effectively.

4. Acknowledge their contribution. Research nurses should be named in publications and presentations, not just thanked in the acknowledgements.

The research nurse workforce is under pressure. Funding is often tied to individual studies, creating insecurity. Investing in permanent research nurse posts is one of the most impactful things a vascular unit can do for its research portfolio.
